Cookie use policy

For the purposes of transparency, this policy contains detailed information on CFI’s use of cookies. This policy applies to all websites published by CFI and explains how Users can control the use of cookies and other similar technologies.

By accessing the website, Users accept the terms and conditions of this policy, which are applicable to each connection and from any terminal.

1. What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that can be saved, subject to the Users’ choices, in a dedicated space on the hard drive of Users’ terminals (computer, smartphone, tablet, etc.) when Users visit the site using their browser. They make it possible to enable CFI functions such as recommending content, user authentication or content submission. Their purpose is to collect information relating to Users’ browsing and to send that information back to CFI.

When Users first connect to the site, a banner appears on the first page. Subject to the Users’ choices, cookies will be stored in the memory of their computer, smartphone, tablet, mobile phone, etc. The information collected in this manner may be used by the Sites or by a third party, such as an advertising agency or a CFI partner. The storage period for cookies is a maximum of 13 (thirteen) months from the date on which the User consented to the saving of the cookie concerned.

Users are free to delete cookies from their terminal at any time. Users also have the option to reject the saving of cookies on their device at any time via the browser and in accordance with the procedure described in point 4 of the present document.

However, the rejection of certain cookies may cause the degradation of a certain number of functions that are required for browsing the Sites (difficulties in saving or displaying, etc.). In such cases, CFI cannot be held liable for such malfunctions. In addition, disabling advertising cookies does not mean that Users will not receive any advertising, simply that it will no longer be adapted to their interests.

Users may also choose to view the site using the “Private Browsing” mode provided by their browser; in this case, the cookies will then be deleted automatically when the window is closed. This can be a good alternative if Users wish to take advantage of all of the Site functions with no risk of sharing their browsing information beyond the duration of their browsing of the Site.

2. What are cookies used for?

The cookies used on our Sites allow CFI to recognise Users when they visit the Sites and to identify their behaviour, remember their preferences or offer them a personalised experience in accordance with their settings. Cookies also make it possible to offer third-party services or advertisements, both on and off the Sites.

Cookies are also necessary for the proper functioning of certain services or to measure the audience of the Sites.

Cookies may be included in the advertising spaces of our Sites. These advertising spaces contribute to funding the content and services we provide.

2.1. The cookies installed by France Médias Monde for its subsidiary CFI

The cookies installed by France Médias Monde for its subsidiary CFI have several purposes:

- Technical cookies

These cookies allow us to monitor the technical performance of our Sites, to detect problems that may impact the User experience in order to correct them, to secure CFI’s platforms and to detect malicious activities and breaches of the General Terms of Use.

These cookies allow us to offer account creation and connection services. They are installed in the browser when the subscriber arrives on a page of the Sites equipped with a personal area as soon as the subscriber is identified through his or her personal account.

These cookies are attached to the account holder. They allow the subscriber to access his or her user area and communication preferences. They contain the data collected directly from the account holder as well as the technical session data, making it possible to navigate from page to page without being disconnected from the user account.

- Cookies associated with social networks

These cookies enable Users to interact on social networks from our Sites, in particular through sharing buttons or modules offered by third parties appearing on certain pages of the CFI Sites. These buttons or modules allow Users to use the functions of these networks and, in particular, to share content on CFI with other users of these networks.

CFI informs you that when Users visit a web page containing one of these buttons or modules, their browser can send information to the social network, which can then associate the visit to the page with the User’s profile on the social network.

If Users do not want the social network to link the information collected through the Sites to their user account, they can disconnect from the social network before visiting the Sites.

Examples:

- Advertisement or user knowledge cookies

These cookies are installed by France Médias Monde’s advertising agencies for its subsidiary CFI and the advertisers and/or their agency (“Partners”) present on the Sites. They are used to direct the most relevant targeted advertising to Users and to offer them a personalised experience. These cookies make it possible to monitor/limit the exposure of Users to certain content, to identify which pages Users visit when browsing the Sites and to categorise them in accordance with their browsing habits.

Users are free to express their choices about the use of these cookies by setting their browser or directly on the partner sites, by following the links mentioned in point 5 below.

Our commitments: The data collected are associated with an anonymous identifier and may be cross-referenced, in certain cases, with qualifying data. These data are shared with France Médias Monde partners who must respect our requirements in terms of security, collection, transfer, storage and use of data.

3. Other technologies and mobile devices

For its subsidiary CFI and its third-party partners, France Médias Monde may use technologies equivalent to cookies such as LocalStorage or local databases in mobile phone and tablet applications to store information equivalent to that specified above.

4. Accepting or refusing cookies and other technologies

Users may decide to delete these cookies at any time. Browsers may also be configured to indicate the creation of new cookies, which Users can decide whether or not to reject. Users may accept or reject cookies, either individually or systematically.

Users can express their choices, manage, disable or authorise cookies directly by adjusting the settings of their web browser or OS as follows:

You may also configure your browser to send a code to indicate to websites that you do not want to be “tracked” (“Do Not Track”) as follows:

You may object to the use of browsing data by our partners, in particular:

The list of these partners may change over time. For this reason, we invite you to return to this page periodically to learn about these changes.

If you refuse to accept cookies on your terminal, you will no longer be able to use certain Site functions, such as:

  • Deletion of social cookies: you will no longer be able to use social sharing (liking, sharing content, making comments, etc.) functions (buttons and/or modules);
  • Deletion of advertising cookies: the display of adverts on the Sites will not take your interests and preferences into account and will be less relevant, but the deletion will not result in the termination of advertising.

CFI accepts no responsibility for the consequences related to the degraded functioning of the Sites and/or services resulting from the rejection or deletion of cookies necessary for the functioning of the Sites by the User.

5. Transfer of data outside the European Union

As some of our partners are based outside of the European Union, the data collected in this manner may be transferred to countries that are not European Union Member States and where personal data protection legislation differs from that of the European Union.

In such cases, CFI implements measures to ensure the security and confidentiality of such data and ensures that any such transfer complies with the legal framework: transfer to a country that provides a sufficient level of protection, signature of contractual clauses issued by the European Commission, or any other regulatory or contractual means whereby it is possible to guarantee a sufficient level of protection.

Please note that we are stringent in our requirements for our partners who use your personal data to do so solely to manage or to provide the requested services. We also require that our partners act, at all times, in accordance with the laws applicable to personal data protection and to afford particular attention to the confidential nature of such information.

6. Useful Information

Please also consult the privacy policy in CFI’s legal notices which define the rules followed in the processing of your personal data that may be collected.

You can find useful links and information enabling you to better understand cookies, their uses and your rights relating to them via the following addresses:

In addition, the CNIL offers a viewing tool that can be used to measure the impact of cookies and other trackers while you are browsing:
