Call for Applications – Kalimat Sudania

Call for applications for the selection: Up to 16 media outlets or media initiatives from Sudan to benefit from capacity building workshops and up to 64 journalists to benefit from thematic trainings.

Presentation of the program

In the frameworks of its Kalimat Sudania project in Sudan funded by the Delegation of the European Union to Sudan, CFI, the French media development agency, is pleased to invite media outlets as well as media initiatives/platforms/projects from Sudan, particularly new media such as online media, news websites, web radios, podcasts, web TVs, blogs as well as journalists and journalism students based inside or outside Sudan, that fall under the below categories to apply to benefit from:

  1. 6 online capacity building workshops for maximum 16 media outlets or initiatives/platforms/ projects.
  2. Online thematic trainings for maximum 64 journalists or journalism students from followed by coaching sessions related to the thematic trainings

There will be 2 categories of beneficiaries:

  1. Media outlets or media initiatives/platforms/projects covering the challenges that young people in Sudan are currently facing or established and run by young people, especially women from Sudan
  2. 64 journalists or journalism students.

Kalimat Sudania project strives to increase the inclusion of young people in public debate, strengthen local journalism and boost collaboration between the media and civil society, notably through local digital media.

There will be two training programmes

CATEGORIE A: MEDIA OUTLETS

à Online capacity building workshops for the 16 selected media outlets

-1 or 2 representative per media outlet will be able to attend the workshops;

Please note that a venue will be provided for participants in their city of residence to attend the online training session.

The selected media outlets and initiatives will benefit from 5 online capacity building workshops of 4 days each, in addition to a 6th 4-days online workshop to be organised on journalism in crisis and the role of the media in times of crisis. The workshops will take place between December 2023 and January 2024. For attendance, 1 or 2 representative per media outlet can be present. The presence of at least one of the two representatives is required for each workshop.

These sessions, led by experienced trainers and coaches, will aim to strengthen the skills of the participants (especially young people) and to discuss issues of common concern to the beneficiaries. Through capacity-building activities, information production, verification processes and media usage will be better understood by the beneficiaries. The workshops, based on practical exercises, sharing of best practices and case studies, will be adapted to the level of specialization and experience of the selected participants (based on an assessment after the selection of the beneficiaries) and will allow in-depth work on the following themes:

  • fundamental principles of journalism (including ethics, integrity and responsibility of journalists);
  • content innovative editorials adapted to the consumption patterns of young Sudanese people;
  • technical developments, interactivity and social media management, taking into account the comments / impressions of young people and user experience (on the site or platform);
  • fundraising and marketing (including how to reach your audience, to attract more audiences, forge partnerships with high visibility, etc.);
  • fact-checking, information verification, use of social networks and cyber security.
  • journalism in crisis and role of the media in times of crisis

CATEGORIE B: JOURNALISTS AND JOURNALISM STUDENTS

  • Workshops for 64 journalists (maximum)

Please note that a venue will be provided for participants in their city of residence to attend the online training session.

In order to stimulate local journalism and encourage the media to work on themes relating to the daily concerns of citizens (especially during the current armed conflict), up to 64 journalists and journalism students will be selected to attend thematics workshops.

Each training cycle will consist of:

One 4-day training course followed by a coaching course with support to produce contents on each thematic (with a break between the 2 courses).

The themes are:

General theme (2 days) for all journalists:

  • Fact-checking and combatting fake news

Then 4 thematic trainings (4 days each) will be held in December –Each journalist can choose 2 thematics.

  • Covering crisis and conflicts and human rights violations

Or

  • Combatting hate speech learning ways to foster inclusion, respect of diversity and social cohesion, and gender-sensitive reporting
  • Reporting on specific issues of concern for citizens during times of crises (livelihood, economy, food security, environment and climate change)

OR

  • Gender sensitive reporting, covering women and youth and minority groups issues, inclusion and rights.

The second session of each thematic training will be held in January (4 days each):

It will include online coaching with exercises, discussions and report writing/content production. Groups of up to 3 journalists can be formed for content production to encourage collaboration between journalists.

Reports will be published by media outlet and will also be shared with the selected media outlets to encourage sharing reports and collaboration.

The selection of beneficiaries will be made according to clear and transparent criteria. The trainings, divided into different components, will be covered by experts and professionals from the MENA region.

Eligibility criteria

CATEGORIE A: Media outlets

  • The applicant must be a media outlet or a media initiative/platform/project covering the challenges that young people in Sudan are currently facing and covering those issues that are of interest to them and/or established and run by young people, especially women in Sudan;
  • The applicants must be a Sudanese media outlet/initiative/project based inside or outside Soudan;
  • The applicant must submit the online application form, with a short description of the media outlet or initiative or project;
  • The applicant must have an interest in producing contents related to the topics included in the trainings and the desire to increase their knowledge and deepen their skills;
  • The participants from each selected media outlet should have the language proficiency to attend the trainings in Arabic;
  • The journalists from each media outlet must commit to produce a content related to the training programme and authorize CFI to reproduce and disseminate them (non-commercial use);
  • The applicant and proposed journalists must demonstrate knowledge of local context, priorities and sensitivities and respect for diversity and social cohesion;
  • The applicant may be requested to provide additional details, information or documents.

CATEGORIE B: Journalists and journalism students

To apply for this training program, you must:

  • Be a Sudanese journalist or journalism student based inside or outside Sudan – Youth, particularly women, and disabled people are encouraged to apply;
  • Have an experience in covering one of the four training topics;
  • Have an interest in producing contents related to the selected topic and the desire to increase their knowledge and deepen their skills;
  • Be available to attend the online applicable training sessions
  • Have the language proficiency to attend the trainings in Arabic;
  • Commit to produce a content related to the training programme and authorize CFI to reproduce and disseminate them (non-commercial use).
