For the second year, Medialab Campus gives journalism schools on both sides of the Mediterranean the opportunity to get to know each other and work together for professional and human exchanges.
Medialab Campus wants to support projects initiated by journalism schools on both sides of the Mediterranean for students and / or professors from the following countries: Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and the countries of the European Union.
Projects focusing on unifying themes will be valued. For example: the environment, democracy, youth, gender equality, local information, etc.
At the end of this call, 6 innovative projects will be selected for the year 2020. Six projects were funded in 2019, find their content on the CFI website.
Medialab Campus proposes the following device to selected projects:
• Support of € 10,000 to € 15,000 for a project taking place in 2020;
• A support system for carriers of the selected projects;
• Networking with other journalism schools on both sides of the Mediterranean.
Supported projects
Projects supported by Medialab Campus should allow exchanges, partnerships and mobility between students and / or teachers of journalism schools. These projects should help to create links between students, create pedagogical exchanges between teachers and facilitate the organization and monitoring of production activities in the field.
Examples of admissible projects (non-exhaustive list):
Coverage of an event by students from several schools with productions valorization, joint investigations, bi-national writing between schools, masterclass, exchange of practices between teachers, specialized courses for students from several schools in a single location, educational cooperation, support for the publication of online educational content, student-student exchanges supervised by teachers and / or journalists, publication projects in media partners, co-graduation projects, teacher / student – teacher / teacher mentoring, training of trainers, summer school.
Examples of non-eligible projects (non-exhaustive list):
Moving an entire promotion abroad, costs of organizing a symposium or a conference, media visit without training, internship or joint production; project for the sole benefit of one journalism school, opening a branch or school in another country by an institution.
Gender equality
CFI is committed to promoting gender equality in all its projects. As such, in Medialab Campus:
Projects run by women’s teams will be studied with special attention. And every project should at least be carried by 50% of women.
_ Selected projects should, whatever the themes and formats, promote women’s rights and gender equality.
_ Projects including an awareness of the gender approach will be favored (example: training, intervention of a female expert, etc.). CFI will encourage project bearers to fight stereotypes spread in the contents produced during the project.
_ Two UNESCO documents are associated to this call for projects. It is highly recommended to read them (found online right here and right here).
_ Any position of responsibility within the projects must be given priority to a woman, for example: in a group of students working on a subject, the editor will be a woman. Multimedia productions will have to respect an exemplary parity: 50/50 interviews of women and men, mixed teams in news coverage, 50/50 photos of women and men not conveying sexist clichés.
_ In each project, a gender referent will have to be designated as the interlocutor with whom CFI can discuss this subject. This referent will be committed to ensuring the promotion of gender equality within the project.
Schools that have found gender equality partners will be promoted, for example: partnership with women journalists’ associations.
_ Ethical and commitment clause for gender equality: if CFI notes that the project, after having been selected, goes against gender equality, CFI detains the right to put an end to the partnership, after an attempt at mediation. Any inappropriate conduct may also be a reason to dissolve the partnership.
Beneficiaries / Eligibility Criteria
Medialab Campus is intended for journalism schools’ students and professors who wish to forge lasting relations with schools situated on the other side of the Mediterranean.
Important:
CFI will provide support especially for visa applications. The logistical organization (buying plane tickets, making hotels reservations, etc.) is the schools’ responsibility and a key point in the students and supervisors’ capacity of setting up projects.
Eligibility:
• A school alone cannot submit a project proposal.
• Each proposal must be submitted by several schools of journalism (or student associations and / or journalism school teachers).
• Each project must be proposed by at least one southern partner and one European partner.
Each proposed project:
• Must be carried by a legally registered structure (school or association) able to draw up an invoice and sign a performance contract
• Must be carried by a structure (school or association) able to receive foreign funds;
• Schools or associations should be based in one of the following countries: Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and the countries of the European Union.
Pre-selection jury and evaluation criteria
After the study of the files’ admissibility, a joint pre-selection committee will meet to select a maximum of six projects for the year 2020.
The list of selected projects will be made public at the beginning of March 2020.
The evaluation criteria that will be taken into account during the selection are the following:

• Internal selection mode of project participants
• Students’ involvement in the projects editing
• Gender equality in the project
• Diversity of languages used
Quantitative (50/100)
• Media partners involved
• Number of schools carrying the project
• Number of productions to be considered
• Budget realism and cost effectiveness
• Geographic balance and distribution among schools
The amount of granted funding
Each project will be supported by CFI between 10,000 and 15,000 euros maximum.
Key dates
• Publication of the call for projects: Tuesday, October 22nd, 2020;
• Deadline for applications receipt online: Wednesday, January 15th, 2020, 8PM, GMT;
• Communication of the list of selected projects: At the beginning of March 2020
Composition of the application file
The application form will be completed online. The file is available in two languages (French and English). Thus, it is possible to complete it in one of these two languages. Please note that to complete the file, you must CREATE AN ACCOUNT.
Only complete files will be taken into consideration.
You should keep a copy of the submitted file.
The file must, imperatively, contain:
• The online form (all fields must be filled in)
• The budget of the action in euros
o In terms of expenditures, payment of salaries of permanent school staff will not be accepted.
o For example, travel and subsistence expenses, trainers’ fees (maximum 25% of the total budget), project communication, purchase of equipment and supplies (maximum 15% of the total budget), room and equipment rental, visa fees, etc. will be accepted.
