Overview
This call for applications seeks to support and empower independent Burmese media outlets amid the country’s ongoing political crisis. Media’s role in providing balanced and verified information has become critical.
The project aims to enhance press freedom by fostering the professionalization and resilience of Burma’s media sector. Its objectives are to:
(1) Restructure and stabilize media outlets to ensure their continued operation.
(2) Protect vulnerable journalists and media organizations.
(3) Build a professional network to strengthen information sharing and collaboration.
Project Presentation:
Context
Since the military coup on 1 February 2021, press freedom declined dramatically in Myanmar. Many journalists have fled the country and have applied for financial and legal support at the international community. To address Myanmar media current challenges, the Naye Thit project implemented by CFI with the support of the French ministry of Foreign Affairs aims to support Myanmar media outlets and media workers promote the dissemination of balanced and checked information for a better-informed citizenry. Its main objective is to protect press freedom by supporting media in exile, and helping journalists to continue their activities.
To address these challenges, CFI (Canal France International) is launching a call for applications to support Burmese media organizations in exile. This initiative aims to strengthen the capacity
of independent media to deliver balanced and professional reporting.
Objectives
The primary goal of this project is to safeguard press freedom and strengthen the resilience of Burma’s media sector. Specific objectives include:
- estructuring media organizations to ensure long-term sustainability and continued delivery of reliable information.
- Protecting journalists and media outlets at risk by mitigating sources of vulnerability and enhancing resilience strategies.
- Stablishing a professional network to facilitate the sharing of reliable, ethical journalism and collaboration among media organizations.
Who is this call for applications aimed at?
- Must be a news organization reporting on Burmese affairs (either general or local) operating in exile and in capacity of receiving financial support
- Should publish news in the Burmese language (bilingual or trilingual news organizations are also welcome).
- Must be willing to provide an annual budget and a mission statement.
Selection Procedure
- Viability of Structuring Support: The organization’s potential to benefit from and effectively implement structural support.
- Motivation for Media and/or Editorial Management: Demonstrated commitment to improving media and editorial management practices.
- Willingness and Capacity to Develop Sustainable Strategies: Ability and readiness to invest time in developing strategies for sustainable operations.
- Number of Staff in Myanmar: The size and capacity of the team working within Myanmar (if applicable)
- Ability to Provide Regular Financial Reports: Capacity to submit timely and accurate financial reports.
- Disclosure of Funding: Willingness to disclose the amount of funding received from other sources.
- Quality of Reporting: Demonstrated quality of journalism, including clarity, depth, and accuracy.
- Use of verified Sources: Reliance on reliable and appropriate sources of information.
- Balanced Media Content: Adherence to journalistic ethics, ensuring impartial and balanced coverage.
- Gender Awareness: Awareness and integration of gender issues both within the editorial team and in the content produced.
Key Dates: call to be published on October 21st. Deadline for applications : November 11, 2024. CFI will contact selected applicants before November 30.
Documents to be Submitted
- 2 pages describing what the funding will be used for (from December 2024 to august 2025).
- A corresponding budget proposal showing what funding has already been secured for the Dec 2024-August 2025 timeframe. The application form.
